A fifth of the year's surplusیکپنجم مازادِ سال
Khums is one-fifth — twenty percent — of what remains of the year's income after the household's reasonable living expenses, the maʾūnah. Each person keeps a fixed annual khums date: once a year, on that same day, they take account of what is left.خمس یعنی یکپنجم — بیست درصد — از آنچه از درآمد سال، پس از تأمین مخارج متعارف زندگی (مئونه)، باقی میماند. هر کس سالِ خمسی ثابتی دارد: سالی یکبار، در همان روز، به حساب آنچه مانده است رسیدگی میکند.
Rooted in the Qur'anریشه در قرآن
Its root is verse 41 of Sūrat al-Anfāl — Qur'an 8:41 — which teaches that a fifth of what people gain is set apart for God and His Messenger, for the Messenger's near of kin, and for orphans, the needy, and stranded travellers.ریشهٔ آن آیهٔ ۴۱ سورهٔ انفال — قرآن ۸:۴۱ — است؛ آیهای که میآموزد یکپنجم از آنچه به دست میآید برای خدا و پیامبرش، برای خویشاوندان پیامبر، و برای یتیمان، مستمندان و درراهماندگان کنار نهاده شود.
Two halvesدو نیمِ برابر
By long-standing practice it is divided into two equal halves: Sahm al-Imām, the share of the Imām (a.j.), and Sahm al-Sādāt, the share of the sādāt in need — those of the Prophet's family.بنا بر سیرهٔ دیرینهٔ فقهی، خمس به دو نیمِ برابر تقسیم میشود: سهم امام، که از آنِ امام عصر (عج) است، و سهم سادات، که سهم سادات نیازمند — از خاندان پیامبر — است.
